In the seventies popmusic was very different from the sixties music. The sixties sound was completely out. Within the seventies the music differed as well. The seventies are often regarded as some area out of one piece, but in the ten years of ABBA several shifts were made in the fashion of the leading popmusic. ABBA was the real seventies! They had a warm feel good sound, typical for those years and over the years they went with the times. Of course they were trendsetters, but they followed trends as well. Their sound was the sound of the main stream. A typical example was the album Voulez-Vous. Those were the disco years, which were very different from the beginning of the seventies or even the middle of the seventies. Disco stood out for a huge beat on every count. The disco influence is very obvious on Voulez-Vous. Even though this is not just a disco copy! ABBA incorporated the disco sound and assimilated it into a very particular style. The beauty of this is, Voulez-Vous really sounds like disco, it really sounds like ABBA, and it sounds really original. This is striking, listen to it. These are three competitive challenges. Until 1979 ABBA was not disco and disco was not ABBA. Following fashion is generally spoken not original, being original is diverging from fashion, and originality is opposite to conforming to the formula. These are three vigours, which all of them are competing to each other. Miraculously ABBA made the best of all three.
This is the third of four pieces in a mini-series about competitive challenges. The next one is to appear on january 1st, 2015.
