The deeper voice that realy touches you. Frida is a mezzo-soprano, her voice sounds a bit dark, as the Scandinavian winters. The best ABBA-songs are sung by her.
Music is not only the production of tones in a technically perfect manner. No, it only becomes music by the emotion put into it. This is what triggers a coincidental listener to remark. And this is what she does. No other singer brings on emotion the way she does.
A perfect example is “When all is said and done”. This song was released as a part of the last ABBA-LP, “The Visitors”. ABBA-fans usually consider this one the never released single!
The song describes the relation of a couple, apparently wondering what they still have to expect from each other. It’s about pain, hope, feelings of guilt, resignation, dignity and the question whether the love is gone. Frida finds herself in this song in an unrivaled way. It seems so personal, that some people found it almost eerie. How does she dare to set herself so vulnerable. Doesn’t that tell us more about those people than it does about Frida? It’s because of her professional attitude that she does more than just empathize the lyrics, she exposes herself. No matter if she’s glad or sad, she knows music is emotion, and true emotion is yourself.
Of course there is more to tell about the music of ABBA. The next article will appear at may the 1-st 2014, midnight (Stockholm time).
